CPDOM
Certified Professional Dental Office Manager. Validating dental office managers through national professional standards.
The management role
The hub of the dental practice
Dental office managers are the hub of the dental practice.
On top of being well versed in day-to-day administration, an office manager needs an overall understanding of many business aspects. The CPDOM recognises that wider scope of responsibility.
What the designation covers
As a Certified Professional Dental Office Manager, you have a deep understanding of the following topics.
Marketing
You understand the fundamentals of marketing, why it matters, and how to plan and execute a marketing plan. Despite fairly strict marketing regulations, a properly executed plan can be the difference between success and mediocrity.
Accounting and financials
All businesses are an accumulation of income and expenses. As the clinic leader, a CPDOM can create a budget, review, analyse and interpret financial reports, establish projections and engage in strategic planning for the short term (1–3 years) and long term (3–5 years).
Human resources
Human resources remains the most challenging aspect to master in any business, and a dental practice is no different. You understand labour laws and human rights legislation, and the fundamentals of interviewing, hiring, training, motivating and facilitating departures. A CPDOM can also create documentation such as a staff handbook, oversee the overall operation of the practice and keep everyone on the path toward agreed goals.
Leadership
Leadership is about making sure your team understands the purpose of the practice and their role in it. You engage the owner in meaningful conversations about practice and individual metrics, inspire the team by personal example, and ensure everyone has the tools they need to succeed.
Regulation and legislation
Dentistry is a highly regulated medical profession, which requires the people who run it to master a jungle of regulations. As a CPDOM you have in-depth knowledge of the relevant municipal, provincial and federal rules, and have built good working relationships with stakeholders throughout. Staying on top of changes in this area is a definite must.
